Senator Balkema Advances Resolution to Declare 2026 as Route 66 Centennial Year

Route 66 has long been a symbol of adventure, history, and economic opportunity, especially in Illinois’ 53rd Senate District, where its legacy remains strong in communities like Pontiac. To honor its impact, Senator Chris Balkema (R-Channahon) successfully passed Senate Joint Resolution 12 in the Senate, one step closer to officially declaring 2026 as the Illinois Route 66 Centennial Year.

When the resolution was called on the Senate floor, Senator Balkema spoke in support of it, highlighting the historic highway’s lasting significance.

“For nearly a century, Route 66 has connected communities, fueled local businesses, and drawn visitors from around the world,” said Balkema. “Pontiac, with its iconic Route 66 Museum, historic murals, and classic roadside attractions, is a shining example of how this highway continues to shape our district. I am proud to lead this effort to celebrate its 100th anniversary and preserve its legacy for future generations.”

SJR 12, filed by Senator Balkema, recognizes Illinois’ deep historical connection to Route 66. The state holds a unique place in the highway’s history, as it was the first to fully pave the road and serves as its starting point.

“Route 66 is more than just a road—it’s a symbol of American freedom and exploration,” Balkema added. “I’m honored that my first resolution in the Senate is dedicated to celebrating this iconic highway and the communities that have kept its spirit alive.”

Known as the “Main Street of America” and the “Mother Road,” Route 66 was established in 1926 and remains an enduring piece of American history. From its vintage diners to classic motels, Illinois continues to embrace and celebrate its legacy while driving tourism and economic growth along its path.

With SJR 12 passing the Senate, the resolution now moves to the House for further consideration.
